Every church needs to answer the question, why do we exist? The answer to this question guides everything we do. If it’s not accomplishing our purpose, we don’t do it.
Our purpose is defined by a single statement:
Our Mission (why we exist)
We exist to help people encounter the love of Jesus Christ and walk with Him.
Our statement of purpose is based on three very important Biblical principles. Who we are called to be comes before what we are called to do. We encounter Him (BE) and then we learn to walk with Him (DO):
The Great Encounter
“We love because He first loved us.”(1 John 4:19 NIV)
We call it the Great Encounter. Until we encounter God’s love, it’s impossible to be who he asks us to be and do what he asks us to do. It all starts here.
The Great Commandment
Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40 NIV
It’s simple. Love God and live for the good of others. If we do this, we are fulfilling every other commandment.
The Great Commission
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 NIV
God sent Jesus on mission to win back His lost kids and make them whole. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus made it possible for us to be His disciples and to join Him on this mission. He has called us to be disciples who make disciples.
Our Strategy (the how)
We help people encounter the love of Jesus Christ and walk with him by teaching them five things. Each one has a “together” aspect that we practice as a community and an “on your own” aspect that we practice in our own relationship with God. As we put these building blocks in our lives, we become fully devoted passionate followers of Jesus.
LOVE God (You were planned for God’s pleasure)
- Together – Sundays and worship/prayer events
- On your own – Bible study and prayer
LIVE for others (You were formed for God’s family)
- Together – Life Groups
- On your own – Gender specific groups of 2-3 for accountability
MAKE disciples (You were created to be like Christ)
- Together – Next Steps Class
- On your own – Invest in others and be invested in (mentoring)
SERVE others (You were shaped for serving God)
- Together – Dream Team
- On your own – discover your calling
REACH people (You were made for a mission)
- Together – Outreach
- On your own – Pray, Care, Share, Invite
Our Vision (mission accomplished)
When it’s all said and done, we will be fully devoted passionate followers of Jesus.
